Martin Doherty and Eugene O'Donnell brought their Subaru Impreza to an emphatic win on the Print Factory Stages rally on Bank Holiday Monday. The Letterkenny duo simply were a step above the rest in what had to be classed as treacherous conditions.
The morning sunshine did favour the spectators who were plentiful and despite turning into a horrible day with torrential rain, the crowds were well compensated with what has to be classed as one of the best years viewing ever on the airfield, the event was sporting a complete new look with the introduction of a two wheel drive event this seemed to be a lot more spectacular and proved a hit with all of the drivers all of which wouldn't have been made possible without the hard endeavors of Fermanagh District Council.
Initially the proceedings were headed by Seamus Donnelly who was at the helm of his beautiful Evo VI Group N car as Seamus settled in to an early lead on the opening test the rest were left to play catch-up Martin Doherty was fourth tenths down Richard Cathcart was a further seven seconds down on the second and Justin McCartin was next up only five tenths of a second down.
The two wheel drive rally was being headed by Rodney White from Rodney McKnight with Trevor Elliott in third. The Class battles were also blossoming into quiet a story.Class One was being dominated by The Alan McMahon, Whilst Derrick Jobb had Class two in his sights,Class Three was closely contended between Gary Mills and Gary Sheridan, Class four was being headed by Gary Clarke and Paul Flanagan, Class Five had Colm McBride in front and Class six had Paul Hughes out in front, walking it in Class Seven was Rodney White and class eight was being headed by Martin Doherty. Indeed the story didn't change much for the rest of the day Donnelly and Doherty continued to dominate and despite young Seamus Donnelly trying with all his might taking time off Doherty on the penultimate stages it was not to be on this occasion. Doherty with the better car and a few recent wins under his belt this year was the deserved winner but one to watch in the future has to be Richard Cathcart who was an excellent third overall.
Davy and Barry McNulty had a good run despite the slippy conditions not suiting the national Tarmac Championship winning car and fourth place was their reward. Rodney White and Richard Bell were overall top two-wheel drive crew followed by Rodney McKnight and Martin McCormick third. The class successes included Jp McSorely who took class one from Damien Lafferty and Mark Browne. Derek Jobb took class two from Bredan McCartan. Gary Sheridan and Derek Johnston who clinched class three from Gary Mills who took second in class three. Class four went to Paul Flanagan and Mark McDonagh from Sam Johnston and Adrian McBride third. Ciaran O'Hagan took class took class five from Robert Ervine with Fergal McGuinness third and Declan Magee and Nigel Corrigan a fine fourth; Paul Hughes triumphed in class six from Ryan McCloskey and Terence McHugh. Class seven was won by Stewart Clarke and Barry Murphy with Trevor Elliott second and Geoffrey Dolan third. Cass Eight was won by Davy and Barry McNulty from Justin McCartin and Norman Elliott third
The success of the day was through the hard efforts of Enniskillen motor club and the staff at the print factory and also from co-sponsor T Durnien Fruit & Veg without their help the event simply could not run.
